911/914 19MM MASTER CYLINDER INSTALLATION GUIDE

First of all thank you for your purchase of my 19mm master cylinder. I’m aiming this instruction guide towards the “easy” install option. I have also included the factory maintenance section that describes the removal and actual rebuild of the part. While you will not need this it’s always nice to be able to more fully understand the system you are working on.

Excellent fender liner installation instructions from 914World member Raynekat!

The 914Rubber fender liners come with rivets for fastening the plastic liners to the mounting brackets.
It quickly became apparent that installation was going to be difficult if I used the rivets. The rivets fasten the liner to the mounting brackets and then the brackets use your rocker panel and valance sheet metal bolts to hold the liner in place. So I opted to use speed nuts t…

Is your warm idle high? Maybe the Auxiliary Air Regulator (AAR) is kaput. The AAR allows more air into the engine when the engine is cold until it comes up to full operating temperature, then it closes down. As with all aging parts, the valve inside the air regulator can get stuck in the open position causing a high idle issue. Rebuilding it isn't difficult. These were made to try to improve the cooling by creating a low pressure area behind them. This draws the warm air down to be replaced by cooler air running under the car. They act as a wing. WE have made an improvement by adding winglets (yes just like in commercial aircrafts) on the edges to increase lift (low pressure), and make them more efficient.
HOME ALIGNMENT OF PORSCHE 914 FOR COMPETITION OR STREET

Thanks to Ray Scruggs for this complete guide to aligning your own car!

According to Ray: “...it just takes time (a lot of time at first) and a few tools. Give yourself a full day to a day and a half the first time you do your own alignment. After you’ve done your first complete and successful four wheel alignment you should be able to do the same type of full alignment in about 4 to 6 hours.

We get a lot of questions like: “What is the ‘functional’ difference between these two different lenses. The TN4 appears to be what is installed on my two 914s, but I’m curious about the TN1-TN2 style. Different / better beam pattern?”

Here are a couple of resources:

When the LED headlights don't trigger the relay, the fix is to isolate the operation by grounding. This way they operate independently. If you have fog lights put enough load on the circuit to trip the switch between high and low beams while the fog lights are on.

LOWER FRONT TARGA SEAL

The lower front Targa seal can also be part of a leaking problem. The main seal diverts 80% of the water, but the lower seal also helps. Often it looks good, but will fall apart if you pull it out. I suspect that very few of these actually get replaced as they look good, and why replace it if it isn't bad. This along with the vertical Targa seals and Targa-to-window seals will help to seal it up nicely.

Do the sides first then the top starting at the center. The clip is tight, so if you need to you can open up about a 2“ section of the top seal by pushing in a screwdriver (flat). Do not twist. This will allow for you to start the seal. Using warm soapy water will help also.

These seals are made from solid neoprene rubber as the OEM is a foam rubber and holds water and can be installed without any glue. The secret is to stretch the rubber as you install it to allow it to get thinner. You can then push into the track and release the rubber it expands in to grab and stay.

Go to Home Depot and get either the 1 or 5 minute epoxy. De-grease the surfaces with alcohol and put a drop it two on the crush ring (inside ) and inside the knob. It will not take much. Install the knob. It will give it more grip. Yes you can break free, but this will give it more grip and will hopefully solve your problem. I have used this technique to reuse these gaskets in a pinch. They are typically one use only.

Our 140/160 pound spring set is supposed to be 3“ shorter than OEM springs. The stock springs are only 66-68 lbs, they compress easier and require additional windings to compress to ride height. With the additional rigidity the length is not required. In fact it would make the car ride higher. These springs were engineered for the slightly heavier 914-6. They can be used for a slightly more ridgid ride.

The biggest problem we see with installing these seals is that most people try to pull the seals on the roof at the top of the window. Yes they can be pulled through the track, and you think that you have relieved all the tension, but in a month or more, the vibration / expansion and contraction will eventually allow the runner to return to the unstretched shape. After installing LED headlights, sometimes the fog lights don't work. There are 2 ways to address the fog light issue. One is to add resistors as my brother did in post 43- the other is to isolate the fog lights from the high low circuit to operate independently starting in post 80. It is actually the way I would prefer to address it as it's simpler and easier to do without adding much of anything.

It isn't difficult. You just need a helper, some butyl tape, the right clips and trim pieces.
